Does my nonprofit need to file the 990-N?

Most tax-exempt organizations whose gross receipts (the total money received in the year, before any expenses) are normally $50,000 or less. If this applies to you, the IRS expects a 990-N every year, even in years with almost no activity.

990-N vs 990-EZ, which one?

It comes down to size. Gross receipts normally $50,000 or less: the 990-N, right here. Under $200,000 in receipts with under $500,000 in assets: the 990-EZ. If your organization has crossed the $50,000 line, start on our 990-EZ page and your details will carry over.

The IRS offers the 990-N free. Why pay?

A fair question with a direct answer: the IRS site files your form, and nothing else. Here, your details are imported so nothing gets typed twice, your return is saved year over year, we remind you before the deadline, and a person can help if you get stuck.

  • Your IRS data imported for you
  • Returns saved year over year
  • Deadline reminders every year

Questions

First time filing? Start here.

When is the 990-N due?

By the 15th day of the 5th month after your tax year ends. For calendar-year nonprofits that is May 15 of the following year. If your fiscal year ends on June 30th, your due date is November 15th. And if your fiscal year ends September 30th, your due date is February 15th.

What is an e-Postcard?

The IRS's nickname for Form 990-N, the shortest annual filing: eight questions, no schedules, filed entirely online. If your gross receipts are normally $50,000 or less, this is your form.

This is my first time filing. Where do I start?

With your EIN and an email address. We import your nonprofit's details from the IRS, so there is nothing to dig out of a filing cabinet. Most first-timers finish in about five minutes.

Can I file for a prior year?

Yes. Choose the tax year you need when you start. If your organization missed a year, filing the missed year promptly matters: three consecutive missed years cost a nonprofit its exempt status.
